"There is a city in the folds of the Himalaya where the gods have never left. Where a medieval square is also a living temple. Where a street market has been trading since the time of the Silk Road. Kathmandu does not ask you to observe it — it asks you to enter it."

Across five extraordinary days, you will move through the layered worlds of one of Asia's most ancient and alive cities. From the hilltop eyes of the Buddha gazing over the valley, to the sacred smoke rising from the ghats at Pashupatinath, to the quiet genius of Patan's courtyards and the sensory carnival of Thamel at dusk — this is Kathmandu on its own terms, with a guide who knows every story behind every stone.

Day by Day

Day 1

Arrival — The City Receives You

Tribhuvan Airport · Thamel · Kathmandu

Kathmandu begins before you expect it to. From the moment you land, our representative meets you at Tribhuvan International Airport and transfers you by private vehicle to your hotel — and already the city is making its first impressions: the temple flags above the rooftops, the smell of incense mixing with diesel, the mountains hiding somewhere behind the haze.

The afternoon is yours to settle into the rhythm of the Valley. A gentle orientation walk through Thamel — the city's ancient trading quarter, now alive with trekking shops and butter-lamp shrines in equal measure — sets the stage for everything that follows.

"Kathmandu does not ease you in. It begins immediately — and that, it turns out, is exactly what you wanted."

Day 2

The Eyes on the Hill — Swayambhu, Kathmandu & Budhanilkantha

Swayambhunath · Kathmandu Durbar Square · Budhanilkantha

The day begins with an ascent. Three hundred and sixty-five stone steps lead to the summit of Swayambhunath — the Monkey Temple — where the all-seeing eyes of the Buddha have watched over this valley since the 5th century. From up here, Kathmandu spreads in every direction, the Himalaya rising beyond it. This is the view that makes you understand why people built a city here.

The afternoon descends into the old heart of Kathmandu: Durbar Square, where the Kumari — Nepal's living goddess — resides in her ornate palace, and Kasthamandap gives the city its very name. The day closes at Budhanilkantha, where a 5-metre stone Vishnu sleeps on a bed of serpents in a sacred pool — one of Nepal's most quietly astonishing sights.

"The eyes at Swayambhunath look past you, through you, and somewhere beyond — into a time you cannot name."

Day 3

Fire & Smoke — Bhaktapur, Pashupati & Boudha

Bhaktapur · Pashupatinath · Boudhanath Stupa

The morning belongs to Bhaktapur — the City of Devotees — Nepal's most perfectly preserved medieval city. Potters still shape clay in Pottery Square, and the five-tiered Nyatapola Temple has stood unmoved through every earthquake for three centuries. There is a particular quality of stillness in Bhaktapur's courtyards that no other city in the valley possesses.

The afternoon is for confronting something more elemental. At Pashupatinath Temple — one of the holiest Shiva shrines in the world — the Bagmati River carries the city's cremations to the sea. Sadhus in saffron robes sit in contemplation on the opposite bank. The evening aarti ceremony fills the ghats with fire and chanting. It is raw, profound, and unlike anything else.

A short drive brings you to Boudhanath — the great white stupa that is the spiritual heart of Nepal's Tibetan community. Walk the kora as the butter lamps are lit, prayer wheels turning, monks circling in maroon robes. The mood here is the perfect counterpoint to Pashupatinath: circular, meditative, quietly joyful.

"Three places, three completely different kinds of sacred. Bhaktapur's silence. Pashupati's fire. Boudha's turning wheels. All of them, somehow, the same thing."

Day 4

Patan & Thamel — Art, Craft & the Living City

Patan (Lalitpur) · Patan Museum · Thamel

Patan — Lalitpur, the City of Beauty — was Nepal's great kingdom of art. Its craftsmen gave the world a tradition of bronze casting, woodcarving and stone sculpture that influenced temple architecture across Asia. The Durbar Square here is an open-air gallery of fifteen centuries of Newari genius, and the Patan Museum inside the old palace is widely considered the finest in the country.

The afternoon belongs to Thamel — Kathmandu turned inside out for the world. Prayer flags and pashminas, thanka paintings and silver, rooftop restaurants and the smell of juniper smoke. Walk without a plan. Get briefly lost. Let the city give you its final, improvisational lesson.

"Patan shows you what Nepal made. Thamel shows you what Nepal is. Both are necessary. Both are true."

Day 5

Departure — You Leave Differently Than You Arrived

Kathmandu · Tribhuvan International Airport

The last morning has a different quality. Kathmandu looks back at you now from a place of familiarity — you know what the flags on the rooftop mean, you recognise the smell of the temples, you understand what it is to live inside a city where the 5th century and the 21st century share the same street.

Depending on your flight time, there is space for a final marigold tea in a courtyard, one last visit to a favourite corner of the city, or simply the walk from your hotel to the waiting vehicle. Our representative will transfer you to Tribhuvan International Airport in time for your onward departure.

The mystery of Kathmandu is not something you solve. It is something you carry with you. And it tends to make you come back.

"Four days is not enough. It never is. That is precisely why you will return."
